Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on Saturday.

“Thanks. Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout.from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired,” he said in a video post on Instagram.

Interestingly, Dhoni shared some memorable moments from his India career in the video on Instagram, with the song Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hoon from the 1976 Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Kabhie Kabhie.

Dhoni is regarded as one of India’s most successful captains, having led the country to two World Cup titles — the World T20 in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011.

Infact, Dhoni is the only captain to win all major ICC trophies (50-over World Cup, T20 World Cup, and Champions Trophy). He also led India to the number one ranking in the longest format of the game.

He had retired from Test cricket in 2014 and was only playing in the limited overs format.

The 39-year-old last played for India in the 2019 World Cup semi-final in July 2019.

He will be making a return to competitive cricket in the IPL, starting next month.

Raina pulled out of IPL after hotel room ‘rift’ with Dhoni?

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Did Chennai Super Kings’s veteran batsman Suresh Raina pull out of the Indian Premier League after ‘rift’ with Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni?

While it couldn’t be officially confirmed, speculation was rife that a family tragedy coupled by a spike in COVID-19 cases in the CSK team might have disturbed the former India left-hander who retired from international cricket on August 15 alongside his skipper Dhoni.

Another theory doing the rounds was that Raina was disturbed by the murder of his uncle Ashok Kumar in Pathankot during a robbery.

Four of his relatives, including his aunt, sustained injuries in the attack, police said on Saturday.

However, according to a report in Outlook on Sunday, Raina was unhappy with the hotel room he was given at the CSK team hotel in Dubai because it did not have ‘proper balconies’.

Apparently, he found the stiff protocols of the bio-bubble claustrophobic and wanted a similar room that Dhoni had been provided.

And when Raina’s demands were not met, the issue spun of control and even Dhoni failed to pacify the left-hander.

The situation only worsened after 13 members of the CSK team, including two players, tested positive for coronavirus and were isolated, the Outlook report further states.

Chennai Super Kings owner Narayanswami Srinivasan slammed Raina for his sudden pull out, saying he behaved like a ‘prima donna’.

‘Cricketers are like prima donnas … like the temperamental actors of the olden days. Chennai Super Kings have always been like a family and all seniors players have learnt to co-exist,’ the former BCCI chief was quoted as saying by Outlook.

‘My thinking is that if you are reluctant or not happy, go back. I don’t force anyone to do anything … sometimes success gets into your head.’

Srinivasan said Raina’s departure could provide the young Ruturaj Gaikwad with an opportunity to prove himself.

‘He is an outstanding batsman and will get a chance now. Ruturaj can become the star of the show, who knows?’ Srinivasan said.

He also backed Dhoni to keep things in check in the CSK camp in the UAE ahead of the IPL, starting on September 19.

‘I have got a solid captain. Dhoni is simply unfazed by anything. That is giving everyone in the team a lot of confidence,’ Srinivasan said.

Srinivasan left the door open for Raina to come back and join CSK. ‘The season has not begun yet and Raina will certainly realise what he is missing and certainly all the money (a salary of Rs 11 crores/Rs 110 million per season) he is going to lose,’ the CSK boss said.

Trevor Gonsalves replaces Chandu Pandit as Vidarbha Ranji coach for the upcoming season

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur: Ending all speculations, Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) has appointed Trevor Gonsalves as the coach of the Vidarbha Ranji team for the upcoming season.

The 48-year-old Gonsalves will replace Chandrakant Pandit. The Mumbai-based Pandit ended his three-year tenure with the Vidarbha early this year.

Under the guidance of Pandit, Vidarbha senior team did the magic by winning back-to-back Ranji Trophy and Irani Trophy titles. However, Pandit could not complete the ‘hat-trick of titles’ in the previous season as Vidarbha failed to reach the knock-out stage also.

After the completion of his eventful three-year stint with the Vidarbha side, Pandit now became the coach of Madhya Pradesh Ranji team this season. Earlier during his playing days around two decades ago, Pandit had led MP to great heights with his dynamic leadership qualities.

Gonsalves was the coach of the VCA U-23 team which won the Col CK Nayudu Trophy 2019-20 played at Indore in March, 2019. The brilliant efforts of Gonsalves with the U-23 outfit helped him seal the coveted post of Vidarbha Ranji side this season. There was a talk among the VCA members regarding hiring an outstation senior coach this year too but due to truncated forthcoming season, they might have dropped the idea.

It will be a challenge for Gonsalves to live up to the expectations of local cricket fans and fill the huge void created by Pandit’s absence. Gonsalves’ elevation as the senior Vidarbha team coach from U-23 side meant VCA has trusted the credentials of former Vidarbha medium-pacer.

Gonsalves played 12 First-Class matches for Vidarbha in the early nineties. The right-arm seamer also represented Vidarbha in 11 List ‘A’ matches.

The executive committee of VCA in its meeting on Monday reviewed the upcoming BCCI tournament’s calendar, starting with the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 tournament to be held from January 10 to 31, 2021 as announced by BCCI on Sunday.

The executive committee approved the appointment of Gonsalves as coach of the senior team for this tournament. The executive committee approved the payment of prize money to the victorious U-23 team of Rs 5 lacs each to the playing eleven of the finals and the coach. The other players have been given Rs 3 lacs each and the support staff Rs 2 lacs each.

The felicitation function and the announcement of the prize money could not take place earlier because of the prevailing Covid -19 situation at that time. The executive committee has decided to hold the felicitation function as and when the situation permits.

Siraj, Bumrah face racial abuse; India lodge complaint

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

The Indian team has lodged an official complaint after the crowd at the Sydney Cricket Ground racially abused pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj over the second and third day of the ongoing Pink Test between India and Australia.

According to BCCI sources, Siraj was allegedly referred to as a ‘monkey’ by a drunk spectator in one of stands at the Sydney Cricket Ground, reliving the infamous Monkeygate episode of the Indian team’s tour of Australia in 2007-08.

The abuses were directed at the Indian duo while they were fielding during the Australian second innings.

While the matter was brought up with the ICC match officials and the security officers at the SCG immediately after the game, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is furious with the turn of events.

A BCCI official in the know of developments said that the Indian cricket board stands with the boys as such behaviour is ‘unacceptable’.

“The tour has surely turned sour and the last thing you expect in a civilized society is racial abuse. The ICC (International Cricket Council) and Cricket Australia need to be very responsive to this as the possible alternatives are not very pleasant for cricket, especially during the present circumstances. The Sydney Test has now become an acid test for CA interim CEO Nick Hockley and we are in complete solidarity with our boys. Racial abuse is unacceptable,” the official explained.

Sources aware of developments in the team said that the bowlers initially brought the matter up with stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane before the team went into a huddle with the coaching staff led by Ravi Shastri and decided that this sort of behaviour should not and will not be ignored.

The relationship between the two teams has taken a turn in recent times with Queensland’s Health Shadow Minister Ros Bates’ comments regarding quarantine guidelines for the fourth Test in Brisbane also painting the visitors in poor light.

With questions raised on whether the Indian team would be willing to follow strict quarantine protocols for the final Test of the series at The Gabba, Bates had said: “If the Indians don’t want to play by the rules, don’t come.”

She had put out the statement on social media as well and her sentiments were echoed by Queensland’s Shadow Sports Minister Tim Mander.

“If the Indian cricket team wants to spit the dummy and disregard quarantine guidelines in Brisbane for the fourth Test, then they shouldn’t come,” Mander said, as reported by Fox Sports. “The same rules must apply for everyone. Simple,” he added.

This came after India opener Rohit Sharma underwent a 14-day quarantine in Sydney and missed the second Test to ensure that all coronavirus-related protocols were followed to the core.

A BCCI official had made it clear that the comments from Bates was uncalled for and should have been avoided as the Indian board has looked to stand united with Cricket Australia and ensured that the tour goes ahead without any hurdles. The official had said if a public representative does not want the team to go and play, that is ‘hurtful’.

You can improve your game by playing practice matches. They are a great way to brush up on your skills and boost your confidence. You can also invite your friends to compete in an exciting league with you. And guess what, you can win real cash bonuses by referring Howzat to your friends.

Invest in players wisely

Always make sure that you invest in players smartly. It is common for a few players to be priced high even when they are in poor form. If you choose such players, you will often have to exclude some other good players. So instead of going by just players’ stature, focus on new and talented players who are in form and create a balanced team. This will increase your chances of winning.

Choose the right players and edit your team if required

Your ability to spot players who can perform well in a match will help you select the right players and score more points. Especially when it comes to T20s and ODIs, it becomes super important to pick the right batsmen. Ensure that you are not ruining your game by selecting those who may never get a chance to bat. Pick players who bat in the first four positions in the batting line-up. While choosing bowlers, go for wicket-taking bowlers because selecting bowlers only on the basis of good economy rates will not get you many points. Another essential but often overlooked key to winning is selecting players who will be actually available to play the game. If you pick a team with players who do not play the game because of injury, etc., you will lose. If any player on your team gets dropped from the team at the last moment because of injury or for any reason, edit your team before the match starts and replace such player(s).

A short delivery from Saini as Labuschagne pulls it through square leg for a couple.

But he gets a lifeline next delivery. Saini gets some extra bounce as Labuschange looks to defend but gets the edge and Rahane puts down a simple catch at gully.

And to make matters worse Saini is down with some injury. This is not looking good as Saini walks off the field with injury as part-timer Rohit will complete the last ball of the over.

Rohit bowls medium pace as Labuschagne cuts it for a single.

In the next over, Labuschagne clips Sundar through the leg side for a single. Wade defends the next few deliveries as Pant gets vocal behind the stumps to distract the left-hander.

Wade then takes a single to mid-off and Labuschagne picks one off the last ball.

With Saini off the field with injury, Natarajan comes back into the attack.

The first ball is down the leg side as Labuschagne misses the glance before he is hit on the pads next ball but the leg before shout is turned down with the ball looking to miss the leg stump.

He then flicks the fifth ball through the covers for three runs to bring up Australia’s 100, in the 38th over.

In the next over, Sundar drops short as Labuschagne makes room and cuts it past point for two runs before he defends the rest of the over with caution.

Natarajan drifts on the pads as Wade clips it on the leg side for one and Labuschagne shows some solid defence to keep out the rest of the over.
