Nagpur: Students of Khaparkheda-based Maharashtra Vidyalaya bagged medals in District level Judo Championship held at Mankapur Sports Complex recently. With their skills, the students excelled in Under-14, Under-17 and Under-19 groups. All the winning players have been selected for Divisional level tournament.

In the 34kg category Under-14 girls event, Tina Alone, Nandini Sahare (36kg), Khushi Sahu (40kg) and Vaishnavi Varkar (44kg) won gold medals. Kartiki Gire also won medal in 35 kg category. In the Undrer-17 girls event, Amruta Ganvir (36kg), Nandini Raut (40kg), Dnyaneshwari Ghodmare (58kg) and in the boys group, Nilesh Chatap (50kg), Sahil Gabhne (55kg), Akash Sontakke (60kg) and Mayur Bighane (65kg) won medals.

In the Under-19 girls event, Janhavi Lanjewar, Pournima Maneshwar, Nikita Dhore and in the boys group, Rajkumar Banarse, Haesh Chaure, and Abhijit Sontakke excelled and won medals. The winners in different age groups will represent Nagpur team in Divisional School Judo Tournament. The President of the school Sunil Kedar, Secretary Suhas Kedar, Treasurer Vaishali Kedar, Principal L R Rathod, Vice Principal C R Likhar, Supervisor Vijay Chandurkar, Sports Teacher Dharyasheel Sute congratulated the students for winning medals.

“I can say only one thing. Mahendra Singh Dhoni will only be the captain for the next IPL Chennai Super Kings next season,” N Srinivasan quoted.

Virat Kohli, team India’s captain in all 3 formats has received an official warning and one demerit point after being found guilty of a Level 1 breach of the ICC Code of Conduct during Sunday’s third T20I against South Africa, which India lost by 9 wickets owing to Quinton De Cock’s 78 in 52 balls.

According to the official ICC release, Kohli was found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “Inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match.”

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Kohli, for whom it was the third offence since the introduction of the revised Code in September 2016. The revised code states that if a player has accumulated 4 demerit points in last 24 months, the points get converted into suspension points. Two suspension points mean that a player can be banned for either a test match or two T20 or Two ODIs, whichever of these, come first for the player since he/she gets the 4th demerit point.

Kohli now has three demerit points after having got one demerit point each during the Pretoria Test against South Africa on January 15, 2018 and against Afghanistan in the 2019 World Cup 2019 on June 22.

Sunday’s incident occurred in the fifth over of India’s innings, when Kohli made contact with bowler Beuran Hendricks while taking a run.

Kohli admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Richie Richardson of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, and as such, there was no need for a formal hearing. According to the ICC rules, a formal hearing only takes place if the player does not admit to the offence.

On-field umpires NitinMenon and C.K. Nandan, third umpire Anil Chaudhary and fourth official ChettihodyShamshuddinlevelled the charge.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

The acting president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India CK Khanna on Monday hailed the decision to appoint Sourav Ganguly as the president of the cricket governing body.

“It is a matter of great pride that former India captain Sourav Ganguly is now set to lead as president of BCCI with his vast experience as cricketer and as former India captain,” Khanna said.

Khanna is optimistic that Ganguly, who is the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and a member of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), will lead Indian cricket to new heights.

“Also, he is member of CAC and president of CAB. He will lead BCCI to new heights and I am confident that he will take dynamic decisions because BCCI’s past few years had faced tough time. We are confident that under his leadership his entire team will do great job during his tenure. I wish all the very best to Sourav and his team,” Khanna said.

Ganguly pipped Brijesh Patel to become frontrunner for the job and is set to be elected unopposed for the top job in Indian cricket.

However, the former India captain, who will have to demit office in July next year, due to the compulsory cooling off period.

R Ashwin led Kings XI Punjab has just announced the appointment of former Indian spinner, Anil Kumble as director of cricket operations. In this role, Anil Kumble will also be serving as the head coach of Priety Zinta owned franchisee of Indian Premier League for the upcoming 2020 season.

Along with Anil Kumble, Kings Xi Punjab also announced the appointment of former Australian Captain, George Bailey as batting coach and former Indian spinner Sunil Joshi as the assistant coach. If the media reports are to be believed, Kings XI might also rope in Jonty Rhodes as the fielding coach and Courtney Walsh as bowling coach.

Apart from being the leading wicket taker for India in tests, Anil Kumble has also been the head coach for Indian National team. Despite having a successful stint with the senior team, he had resigned owing to the fallout with the Indian captain Virat Kohli.

Speaking to media last week, Kings XI co-owner Ness Wadia said, “Kumble is our choice to coach Kings XI. The world knows about his cricketing and coaching abilities. He’s a very calm, cool and collected person. He comes with a lot of experience in the IPL, having worked with two other franchises in the past, and also with the Indian team. We’re pretty sure that under his leadership, Kings XI will do very well,” he added.

Naturally, Sourav Ganguly aka ‘Dada’ has been setting the buzz since his recent accession to the rank of BCCI (Board of Cricket Council of India) President.

In a recent interview, Ganguly was spotted sporting a blazer from 19 years back, as he went for his official appointment as BCCI’s President.

Touching the shirt in a gesture to ‘remove dirt’, he said that the blazer was given to him in 2000 when he was the captain of the cricket team.

Revealing his passion and commitment towards the game, Ganguly decided to put on the same blazer as he moves ahead to head another cricket assembly. The video was posted by media on Twitter, which read, “Sourav Ganguly while addressing media after taking charge as the President of Board of Control for Cricket (BCCI) in Mumbai: I got this (blazer) when I was the Captain of India. So, I decided to wear it today. But, I didn’t realize it’s so loose.”

Captain Rohit Sharma, who sustained an injury during India’s nets session on Friday, was declared ‘fit and available’ for the opening T20 International against Bangladesh in New Delhi.

“Rohit Sharma was hit in the left side of his abdomen while batting in the nets today. The BCCI medical team has confirmed that he is fit and available for the first T20I after assessment of his injury,” BCCI said on Friday.

Rohit was hit on his left thigh while taking throw downs at the Arun Jaitley stadium in New Delhi, forcing him to leave the nets session mid-way as the Indian team prepared for the T20I series opener on Sunday.

Rohit is leading India in the three-match series in Virat Kohli’s absence.

He immediately left the nets and it was visible that he wasn’t happy with the pace at which the throwdown delivery was hurled at him.

The Indian team has a designated a left-arm throwdown expert in Sri Lanka’s Nuwan to counter left-arm seamers in the opposition Mustafizur Rahaman in this particular series.

Usually, the batsmen take throwdowns in order to get some rhythm before facing bowlers in the nets.

Since the practice pitches at most Indian grounds are not of great quality, players want to be cautious during the net sessions.

The practice session was a good enough indicator that Sanju Samson will not be keeping wickets as he was seen fielding with others and number one choice Rishabh Pant was seen devoting extra time to his glove work.

Nagpur: Come November 10 and all roads will lead to Vidarbha Cricket Association’s Jamtha Stadium, where India and Bangladesh will try to outdo each other in aTwenty20 match. As the fans frenzy go super high to greet their favorite cricketing stars in their city, the traffic arrangement will pose a big challenge before the department.

Keeping up with the tight traffic schedule on Wardha road , which is already squeezed out in view of development works, particularly widening of railway overbridge near Chinch Bhavan and ongoing metro rail works, the traffic department has enforced its men to ensure traffic remains under control.

On Thursday, the city Commissioner of Police Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay visited VCA stadium to review the arrangements. Over 400 traffic policemen along with volunteers will be monitoring the traffic situation on the day the match will be played.

Meanwhile, the traffic department has also appealed NMC to provide city bus facility to ferry cricket fans to the stadium. Movement of heavy vehicles from Chhatrapati Square to Wardha road will be barred from 2 pm to midnight. Vehicular traffic flowing in from Butibori side will be diverted to the bypass.

To avoid jam traffic police will facilitate both the ways on Wardha road as one-way. Also no vehicle will be allowed parking on NH-7 on match day.

Nagpur’s VCA stadium in Jamtha turns winning ground for Team India one more time as Deepak Chahar wreaked havoc with figures of 6 for 7 while India thrashed Bangladesh by 30 runs in the third and final T20 in Nagpur on Sunday. With the victory in the final T20 , India also took the series 2-1.

Chasing a tricky 175-run target, Chahar shook the Bangladesh top order, removing Liton Das and Soumya Sarkar on consecutive balls. But then Mohammad Naim and Mohammad Mithun stitched a brilliant 98-run partnership for the third wicket to put India under pressure.

Chahar then came back to break the dangerous partnership that opened the door for the hosts. Shivam Dube, then struck in quick succession to put India back on top. Towards the end, Chahar removed Shafiul Islam, Mustafizur Rahman and Aminul Islam on consecutive balls to become the first Indian to claim a hat-trick in T20Is. Chahar also registered best bowling figures in T20Is.

DCP Rajmane was speaking at the inaugural function of “Kho-Kho competition 2019” organized by the Office of Nagpur Commissioner at Police Headquarters, Katol Road. Police Inspector, Ramanand Singh, Sudhir Nimbalkar, Nagpur and Vidarbha Kho-Kho Association Secretory, Professor, Sunil Sonare former National Level Athlete were present on the dais.

Asserting on how sports teach us art of living and how the dav (moves) of Kushti helped him through his interview, DCP Rajmane said, “I believe sports teach us the art of living. Besides developing physical qualities, sports help you achieve quality skill set. It increases your ability of planning, set strategies, build team work etc.”

“I was enthusiastic sportsmen. I had participated in Kabbadi, Kushti, Karate, kho-kho during my school and college days. During an interview I was once asked how my dav of kushti will help me in policing? To which I replied that in kushti you have to apply your dav (moves) so significantly to come on top. I’ll use same dav during my police tenure to counter difficulties,” mentioned the DCP.

Commenting on fat bellies of some policemen, the DCP said, “Hectic work schedule, uncertain diets are the key factors behind it. However, sports will provide the necessary escape and provide you new avenues of healthy life,” the DCP added.

Eight teams will lock horns in the two-day competition. Commissioner of Police, Dr Bhushan Kumar Upadhyay will felicitate the winners on Saturday.
