Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Nagpur News: Representatives of the ten full members (Test playing nations) of the International Cricket Council will have a brainstorming session at the annual two-day ICC National Umpire Managers meeting at Nagpur on July 15 and 16. The first three such meetings were held in Dubai, Australia and England.

Prof. Ratnakar Shetty, General Manager, Game Development, BCCI will represent India at the meeting. Representatives get a chance to highlight the development programmes run by their Boards and also discuss, in general, the umpire-related activity in the previous season.

Other well known names who will take part in the two-day session are Simon Taufel, the ICC umpire performance and training manager and Vince van der Bijl, the ICC umpire and referee manager. They will also conduct a five day (July 17-21) “coach-the-coach” programme at Nagpur.

While Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, West Indies, Bangladesh will have one retired umpire-representative at this meeting, India — being the host country — will have two persons in Bomi Jamula and V.N. Kulkarni. The five day session will also be attended by Peter Manuel (in charge of Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh), Denis Burns (in charge of England, South Africa and Zimbabwe) and David Levens (in charge of Australia, New Zealand and West Indies).

The BCCI has a panel of a dozen umpire coaches, who were discarded for senior tournaments in the last season, but were allotted matches for junior tournaments. After upgrading their knowledge at Nagpur, Jamula and Kulkarni are likely to train the remaining BCCI-panel umpire coaches before the start of the 2013-14 season.

Nagpur News: MS Dhoni has done it for India once again. Needing 15 to win off the last over, Dhoni hit Shaminda Eranga for two sixes and a boundary as India are crowned the tri-series champions.

Chasing a meagre 202, India, from 139/3 at one point of time, were reduced to 167/8, giving Sri Lanka control. However, Dhoni stayed unbeaten at 45 to guide India to an exciting win.

With 15 required of the final over, MSD smashed a six on the second ball and followed it with a boundary and another maximum to guide India to another title.

Herath dismissed Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin in consecutive deliveries to reduce India t0 152/7.

After Rangana Herath got rid of Sharma, Suranga Lakmal sent back Raina to leave India at 145/5. Raina made 32 before getting caught behind.

Rangana Herath claimed his second victim in the form of danger man Rohit Sharma (58) after his 62-run stand with Suresh Raina for the fourth wicket and reduced India to 139/4, in their chase of 202.

In the 32nd over, Herath bowled out Sharma after his 89-ball knock that was studded with five boundaries and a six.

Earlier, Herath dealt India third blow by removing Dinesh Karthik (23) after a steady 50-run stand with Sharma.

Herath got Karthik caught by Mahela Jayawardene at slip to reduce India to 77/3 in 23 overs.

Defending 202-run target, Sri Lankan pacer Shaminda Eranga dismissed opener Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli in quick succession to put India in trouble.

Eranga got both Dhawan (16) and Kohli (2) caught behind to reduce India to 27/2 in 10.4 overs.

Earlier in the day India has won the toss as MS Dhoni is back for the final match and he has asked West Indies to bat first.

The Indian team has done exceptionally well to reach the finals of the tri-nation series. After losing two matches in a row, they bounced back to defeat Sri Lanka and then West Indies comprehensively in the next two matches, with bonus points to seal their final berth. After all this hard work, they would want to end their campaign on a high note.

Sri Lanka on the other hand have had a mixed tournament so far. They lost the first match against the hosts after which Tharanga and Jayawardene posted 213 runs for the first wicket against India, a match where they won by 161 runs. They then defeated West Indies in their third match before being bundled for just 96 runs in their last match against India, where the Indian team registered their second win and stormed through to the finals.

While talking to media persons Chouhan whole heartedly lauded Dhoni. He said, ” MS has lot of talent. Whether it is captainship or finishing the things at appropriate time, he has no match”. He said Dhoni has already proved his mettle in all forms of cricket. Under his leadership, India drubbed Australia in home Test series and then won Champions Trophy and Tri Series at West Indies. Under his captainship, India became Twenty-20 cricket champion also”.

About India’s chances in 2015 World Cup, Chouhan said, ” The average age of the current player is 26. I think in coming days there will not any major changes in the team combination. The way young brigade is performing under the leadership fo Dhoni, India will be the strong contender for the 2015 World Cup to be hosted by Australia and New Zealand”.

Chouhan is optimistic about the comeback of Delhi pair Virender Sehwag and Gautam gambhir. He said,” There is always a possibility of comeback of such players whose avarage is between 44 to 50 in the internatioanl cricket. Such cricketers can be out of form for some time but no one can ruled them out totally. Sehwag and Gambhir are such players who can regain their lost form at any time”.

Chouhan rated his opening partner Sunil Gavaskar as one of the best openers in international cricket. In this regard he said, ” I got an opportunity to open with him in as many as 34 Test matches. I have not seen the opening batsmen like him till date”.

Asked who is deserves Bharat Rata Sachin or Major Dhyan Chand, he said, ” No doubt, hockey wizard Major Dhyan Chand deserves first Bharat Ratna in sports”. He said when it was thought to give Bharat Ratna to the sportspeson, Sachin was at centre place. But Sachin is still playing and he can be honoured with this prestigious award later also”. The former Test cricket also said that nobody can compare the achievements of two legends. ” Under Dhyan Chand’s leadership, Indian hockey team consistently clinched gold medals. As far as Sachin is concerned he has scored 100 centuries in international cricket”.

Chetan Chouhan Chetan Chouhan has advocated to bring Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) under the purview of RTI. He said, ” I personally think that to maintain the transparency each sports organisation should come under the ambit of RTI. Especially cricket in which huge amount of money is involved”. At the same time Chouhan said the government will have to make some amendments before implementation of RTI in sports. The issues like selection should kept away from RTI.
