Prithvi Shaw scores maiden Test century on debut

Prithvi Shaw collected plenty of ‘youngest ever…’ milestones on his debut in the first Test against the West Indies at Rajkot. He started off by becoming the youngest specialist batsman to debut for India since Sachin Tendulkar in 1989 against Pakistan. He became the second youngest Test debut opener for India.

By scoring a 56-ball 50, he became the youngest to score a fifty on Test debut for India. Later, he became the youngest to score a Test century on debut for India. He reached the milestone in 99 balls with 14 boundaries to his name.

Shaw is the 106th player to score a century on Test debut and is the first since Ireland’s Kevin O’Brien against Pakistan earlier in the year. Last Indian to achieve this feat was Rohit Sharma, also against West Indies in 2013. Overall, 15 India players have scored centuries on Test debut.

Earlier, Shaw became the fifth youngest opener to a score a 50 on Test debut behind – Hanif Mohammad, Jeff Stollmeyer, Tamim Iqbal and Imran Farhat. He is the third youngest to score a Test fifty for India behind Sachin Tendulkar and Parthiv Patel and ahead of the likes of Ravi Shastri and Dinesh Karthik.

Not facing one of the best attacks with West Indies bowling looking toothless on the most part. Having said that, the 18-year-old Shaw gave ample evidence of his brilliance with effortless boundaries and confident strokes around the ground.

Shaw received the Test cap from Virat Kohli on the morning to become the 293rd cricketer to represent India and showed supreme confidence from ball one, on which he offered a watchful leave. He then punched the second ball towards the cover boundary for a three, his first runs in international cricket, easing whatever nerves were left inside him. His first boundary came in the second over bowled by Keemo Paul, another back-foot punch towards the point boundary.

While he punched and drove effortlessly off pacers, Shaw was equally comfortable against the spin duo of Devendra Bishoo and Roston Chase.

Kohli wants BCCI to change rule: Let wives stay for full overseas tours

India captain Virat Kohli has requested the cricket board to allow wives of players to accompany the team for the full duration of overseas tours. The current policy restricts the stay of wives of players and support staff to just two weeks.

It is learnt that Kohli first broached the issue with a top BCCI official who in turn conveyed the teams request to the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators headed by Vinod Rai and Diana Edulji.

Sources said that the CoA has now asked Indian team manager Sunil Subramaniam to make a formal request to change the rule but that they would not be taking a decision any time soon. Since this will require a shift in the BCCIs stance, the CoA is expected to postpone the decision to a time when the new BCCI body will be in place.

The request was made a few weeks back but as it is a BCCI policy decision, the manager will have to submit a formal request first. Anushka has been travelling with Kohli overseas, however, Kohli now wants the old rule to be abolished and a new policy should come up where wives should be allowed to travel with the Indian team, a source said.

The cricketing world for long has been divided on allowing wives and girlfriends on long tours. At present, most countries have restricted family time. In 2007, after an Ashes disaster, the England and Wales Cricket Board asked an independent sports administrator to determine the reasons for the 5-0 whitewash against Australia. The report recommended a limit on the time wives and girlfriends should be allowed on tour. This did not go well with players and Englands star batsman Kevin Pietersen had called the suggestion a load of nonsense.

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

Pooja Dhanda joined the elite Indian company of women grapplers after defeating Grace Bullen of Norway 10-7 in the 57kg Freestyle category to clinch the bronze medal at the World Championships in Budapest on Thursday.

Before Pooja, only three Indian women grapplers Alka Tomar in 2006, Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat in 2012 had won a bronze medal each at the World Championships tournament.

Pooja, who led 6-1 in the first period, had to go through some harrowing moments in the second period when the Norwegian launched an all-out attack which the Indian managed to stave off, despite giving away some passivity points and step-out points.

In fact, what clinched the bronze play-off bout in Pooja’s favour was the four-pointer which zoomed her to an unassailable lead after the Indian got to Grace’s leg and rolled her for the vital clincher.

Earlier, Pooja had defeated Alyona Kolesnik of Azerbaijan 8-4 to reach the bronze medal bout.

Meanwhile, in the 50kg freestyle bronze medal play-off, India’s Ritu Phogat began with a promise only to fade away against the tight defence of Ukraine’s Oksana Livach.

However, Rio Olympic bronze medallist Sakshi Malik failed to past the repechage round, losing 2-3, including a challenge point to Hungarian Marianna Sastin to bow out of the contest.

Winning is definitely a habit. For decades Vidarbha had no BCCI trophy to show for and within two years…they have won five! Celebrating the selection of five of their team-mates— Mandar Mahalle, Nayan Chavan, Harsh Dubey, Rohit Dattatraya and Dushyant Tekan for the upcoming India U-19 Challenger Trophy, the motivated boys scored a thumping 83-run win overTamil Nadu to bag the Vinoo Mankad Trophy for the Under-19 one-day limited overs tournament at VCA Civil Lines ground on Sunday.

Chasing Vidarbha’s 297-6, built largely around hundreds from Yash Rathod and Aman Mokhade, Tamil Nadu were bundled out for 214 with leg-spinner Rohit Dattatraya (5-37) returning with a five-wicket haul. Vidarbha winning the titles started as recently as in January 2017.

The Under-16boysthumpedUttarPradesh by 171 runs at Holkar Stadium in Indore to win the first silverware — the Vijay Merchant Trophy. The seniors did an encore in the same city at the same venue winning the Ranji Trophy this year in January

The U-19 boys followed it up with the Cooch Behar title at home and the seniors lifted the Irani Cup at home for the fourth title. The U-19 boys completed the ‘High Fives’with Mankad Trophy. A host of players graduated from the U-16 side that won the Vijay Merchant Trophy while one came from the Cooch Behar winning team. These are the youngsters who are making winning a habit.

Mandar Mahalle, who led the then U-16 side, Dattatraya, Sandesh Durugwar, Mokhade and Harsh Dubey were the team mates while Yash Rathod was the part of Cooch Behar wining side. Rathod was the highest run scorer in India last season and has also represented India U-19 teams in various competitions. The U-19 winning captain Atharva Taide got himself promoted to the Ranji squad and was named in the Indian squad for the Emerging Teams Asia Cup on Sunday.

Kadam (24*) and Dubey (13*) ensured the hosts reach close to 300.

With almost six runs required from every over,Tamil Nadu batsmen were under pressure. They could not have a big partnership and except for opener P Praveen Kumar (48) and skipper R Sonu Yadav (33), none of the batsmen could impress much. Dattatraya was well supported by left-arm spinner Dubey (2-42), Mahalle (1-29) and seamer Dushyant Tekan (1-30).

In fact, from this year only the U-19 event was upgraded from the zonal level to the national level.
