Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

The BCCI has recommended former India captain Rahul Dravid for the prestigious Dronacharya award and once again nominated Virat Kohli for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna honour. Legendary opener Sunil Gavaskar’s name has been recommended for Dhyan Chand Lifetime Achievement Award.

CoA chief Vinod Rai confirmed Dravid’s nomination for the Dronacharya award.

“Yes, we have sent a number of nominations in various categories to the government. Rahul is the BCCI nominee for the Dronacharya award,” Rai told Media.

Dravid has been nominated for successfully guiding the India U-19 team to World Cup title early this year. Under his guidance, the Colts batch of 2016 played the finals.

He has worked with India A team also and is the bridge between international and junior cricket. BCCI had stopped sending nominations for Dronacharya awards due to multiple coaches at times claiming credit for a player’s success.

“It happened when a former India opener had signed two nominations where coaches claimed that the player worked under them. From then, we had stopped sending nominations,” a senior BCCI official said.

“However when Rajkumar Sharma (Kohli coach) got Dronacharya award, it was a personal nomination. He was not BCCI nominee. For someone of Rahul’s stature, we have decided to depart from convention,” the official added. As per Kohli’s nomination for Khel Ratna, it has been learnt that BCCI has nominated the Indian captain him for the second time.

Kohli’s name was sent in 2016 but being the Olympic year, the three stars of Rio, PV Sindhu, Sakshi Malik and Deepa Karmakar were conferred with the award. As far as Gavaskar is concerned, his contribution in Indian cricket as a player and then as a critique has been unquestionable. Normally, the convention for Dhyan Chand award is to confer those who have not got Arjuna award during their playing days. However Gavaskar is an Arjuna awardee.

Shami with Wife Hasin Jahan

Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami’s estranged wife Hasin Jahan has now accused her husband of age-fudging and fooling the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Hasin, who has been involved in a spat Shami for quite some time, said the fast bowler created a fake birth certificate to play national and state-level cricket. Hasin also posted a picture of a driving license on Facebook, claiming it belonged to Shami.

According to the document posted by Hasin, Shami was born in 1982, while official records show his birth year as 1990.

The post was later deleted from the social media platform.

Hasin in her post also added that Shami fooled BBCI and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) by providing a fake birth certificate in order to play in age-group cricket.

“See friends, the real birth year of Shami Ahmed. He made a fake birth certificate and has fooled everyone by showing his birth year as 1990. He fooled BCCI, CAB and also public by making a fake birth certificate that allowed him to play Under-22 cricket,” Jahan had written, as quoted by Hindustan Times.

“Imagine the injustice done to a genuine 22-year-old cricketer who was denied a place in U-22 team because of Shami.”

The public feud between the both started in March, when Hasin had accused Shami of extra-marital affairs with several women and following an official complaint, Kolkata Police lodged an FIR against the India pacer and four of his family member.

Over the next weeks, both Hasin and Shami took potshots at each other and issued strong statements in the media. Both parties accused the other of lying and Shami questioned Hasin’s mental health.

Hasin, meanwhile, said Shami was a flirt and periodically released screenshots of his alleged chats with other women.

Hasin had also mentioned Shami’s involvement in match-fixing, which forced the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to withhold his central contract. But, after a thorough investigation from BCCI’s anti-corruption unit (ACSU) head Neeraj Kumar, he was cleared of any such thing and BCCI offered him a fresh central contract, which it had withheld following his wife’s police complaint.

Shami has refuted all the allegations and said that someone was misleading his wife.

Unstoppable Saina Nehwal raring to go

Nagpur Today : Nagpur News

New Delhi: India’s veteran shunter Saina Nehwal believes she can still reach higher levels and achieve greater things as she feels she has got rid of the physical issues that were bogging her over the past couple of years. The 2012 Olympic medallist was inconsistent in the past couple of years, thanks to the physical troubles, especially failing to get into full rhythm after undergoing a knee surgery in August 2016, days after the Rio Olympic Games. However, Saina’s recent form saw her overcome obstacles on and off the court.

The two time World Championship medallist credits her recent strong fitness to the strength and conditioning exercises she has undergone in the past 45 days with physic) Christopher Pedra, who joined the Indian after the Indonesia Open. In April, Saina played a big role in India’s gold medal triumph in the mixed team competition of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Gold Coast, Australia in the first and second weeks of April. The 28-year-old also got the gold medal in the women’s singles contest as she defeated compatriot P.V. Sindhu in the final.

Saina then grabbed her third Asian Championship bronze medal with a semi-final appearance at Wuhan, China on Saturday “It is about working hard. You see (tennis legends) Serena Williams and Roger Federer still doing extremely well at the higher levels. I have that never give up attitude — which of course helps,” she said on the sidelines of the Badminton Association of India (BAI)’s felicitation ceremony of the CWG medallists. “Moreover when you feel well, the court becomes really easier. Now I have one of the best physios in Christopher Pedra. He has been extremely valuable. I can feel the difference,” she added. “There were hip and knee issues from which I was struggling to come out of.

Now there is a lot of improvement on my strengths. I am moving much easily on the court. There were some weaker areas in my legs on which he has worked. Now there are less niggles.” Asked about her secret in handling pressure for such a long time, Saina said: “It is important to be positive when you play. It is not a burden I have
the attitude of giving my best and whining. I have been playing for so many years. I believe I can pull off 90 per cent of the matches. It is not easy to take the pressure. I always give my best – sometimes I lose as well. I try to relax as much as possible. “All opponents are dangerous. I have a good record against most of them. I have issues against some of the players as well. I keep working on the areas I feel. Always be careful and alert.” One opponent that has been regularly getting the better of Saina is Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu Ying.

Saina’s 25-27, 19. 21 loss in 45 minutes in the semi-final in the Asia Championships was her ninth on the trot against Tai, who now has taken a 11-5 lead in the head-to-head record against the Indian veteran. Saina said that she needs to get better in order to beat world No.2 from Chinese Taipei. So what makes Tai such a ferocious opponent? Saina answered: “She was good with her hand and strokes, the only thing she had to do well was improve on her fitness. She has done that. That is working well for her. Due to her incredible confidence, thanks to the so many wins she has posted in the last one and half years, she has been coming out on top even in difficult moments.

” Saina then talked about her loss in Wuhan. “It was a matter of last two points. I was leading both the games. I should have been more alert. Tai certainly changed the game in the last two points. When you play someone like her, she is really smart and you have to be alert with her in the last few moments,” she said. “All of us have been struggling against her. She has every shot as a deceptive shot. She will make you mad at any point of time. Her consistent hand-stopping movement tires you down in two games and she knows that the third game is her strength because of her fitness level.”
